Research about singleness presented in IASSCS conference in Dublin

Part of my thesis was presented at X IASSCS CONFERENCE  “Literacies and Sexualities in Cultural, Fictional, Real, and Virtual Worlds: Past, Present, Future Perfect?” that took place at Dublin City University, Ireland, in 17-20 June, 2015. It was such a pleasure to share data about sexuality of single people in Salvador and to discuss other subjects related to sexuality in South America with a researcher from Mexico, and the audience!
Abstract of the paper:  Singleness and Sexuality in Brazil
Darlane Silva Vieira Andrade, Federal University of Bahia

Brazil is internationally known as a tropical country in which people are sexually free, especially if they are not marriage. But, besides this international representation, how do single people experience sexuality themselves? The objective of this communication is mainly to present some aspects of experiences in the field of sexuality according to single people living alone in Salvador – the capital of Bahia, a state located on northeast of Brazil. It will be done using data from my Doctorate study about singleness in Salvador, which sought to comprehend and analyze how do middle class adults living alone in the capital of Bahia, experience and build meanings about the condition of being single. Based on a feminist epistemology and having gender as the main category used to analyze data, this study used mixed methods with the following instruments: structured questionnaire, applied to 76 people; focus groups with 7 participants; biographical interview with 6 people. All participants were both sex, aged 30 to 60 and most of them were heterosexual. Related to sexuality, it was investigated how their past experiences in this field were, how are they practicing sexuality currently – with whom, where, with what frequency, their opinion about sex and love, the level of satisfaction with their affective and sexual life –, and their projects to the future related to intimacy. The research collaborated for reflections about men and women´s behavior according to their singleness condition, deconstructing some gender stereotypes for example, when single women are getting used to go out with their friends and to have casual sex, just like single men do, and man affirm more than woman that getting marriage and have kids are expected for their future. It was also important to observe the possibilities that adults have to build ways of living in urban context where freedom is an important element used to manage social, affective and sexual practices, especially in Brazil that is still a country with a culture that mixes permanencies and changes in the field of intimacy.
Key words: singleness; sexuality; gender; brazilian culture
